Wow,he isn't drunk😂
it's weird that the older a musician gets, the stories they told when they were younger feel distant. Almost like you're playing a shadow of yourself. To see your own songs as covers has to be the strangest feeling. Something you invested so much energy into, eventually becomes a stranger when you're looking forward and not dwelling in that time when you wrote it.

When anyone brings up the arctic monkeys, to me, I immediately think of their early stuff (i.e. Pre-suck it and see stuff). When he says there's something missing that makes it difficult to play their old songs, it honestly makes me a little upset because it's like confirmation that that chapter of them is done. I remember countless summer nights blasting Whatever the people say-- and Humbug and Favorite worst nightmare.. fun times... I know artists are entitled to experiment but what happened? why did they take such a serious turn?
Tony Genna ii feel EXACTLY the SAME way you do! ii think arctic monkeys. ii LITERALLY think “505” “all you people are vampires” “old yellow bricks” essentially just FAVOURITE WORST NIGHTMARE! ii mean everything else was GREAT. but THOSE was their CLASSICS! what made them THEM!
I know Mike, he recorded some of our shit back in the 90's in Parr Street. Luckily we didn't become famous because that would have been terrible.

BALENCIAGA (1 year ago)
+Ben Smith I meant as the years have progressed, their music and songwriting has evolved beautifully. The second and third albums are of course way deeper than the first album and the demos, both of which are fun in its own way. With AM they combined different genres in a way no one has done before, and you really cant compare the lyrics of their first album to their latest one.
Ben Smith (1 year ago)
Jasleen Marwah oh really? AM is deeper than WPSIATWIAN and Favorite Worst Nightmare? Literally every song on that album is about him wanting to have sex with a girl and maybe being able to.
Robert (1 year ago)
Jasleen Marwah I disagree, their old music is so much better. I agree with the part that obviously they wont stay the same for nearly 10 years but their old music is so much better than now
BALENCIAGA (1 year ago)
yeah songwriting's gotten so much better and deeper. Obviously artists and their art can never be the same as they were 10 years ago.

It's interesting the way that Alex pointed out that playing some of the older songs felt like they were playing cover songs. I always liked the older songs but I understand now why they don't play them much anymore as they don't really fit the style of their new stuff and so they sound a bit awkward. I still can't wait for whatever they do next!

I don't understand why people can't understand what he's saying. Is it because they're American or something and don't understand that there is more than one accent in the UK? Sounds fine to me, just a Sheffield accent.
Luckas Bish (1 year ago)
I know I see comments saying what the hell is this man saying but I understand one hundred percent
midsummersky (1 year ago)
i guess it depends on what you're used to. i'm dutch too and understood him perfectly fine. it's just the regional accent. on the other hand, i was so distracted by him pausing and thinking so much over during his talking, that i had to take a second time to focus on what he was actually telling 😂
Lisa Geelen (2 years ago)
but in this interview its not that bad actually
Lisa Geelen (2 years ago)
he doesnt articulate very well, he speaks slow and low, all the words are sticking together and sometimes he leaves letters out of a word that shouldnt be. ANd Im dutch so its not my native language. Its much harder then I think
Ja (2 years ago)
i think it's because a lot of people don't have english as the first language (like me) so it's really difficult to understand such a heavy accent, plus his tone really low :/
Jamie Bales (2 years ago)

I love his accent. It makes everything that he says sound elegant and posh. Also, hell yeah Sheffield, thanks for producing two of my favorite bands.
Julie Ma (2 years ago)
+Dayna Lee Yes, I mentioned it above. Like I said, as an American, I'm easily impressed by any sort of accent from the UK! I'm well aware that most of you guys who actually live there think Sheffield accents are wack, but hey, I love accents.

It's not even so much his accent as it is the fact that you've forgotten half the sentence by the time he's done.
Deborah Nash (6 months ago)

There are people who are effortlessly cool, and that works. Then there are people who make a very noticeable effort to be cool, and it doesn't work so well. Turner is definitely the latter
Brad Cogan (6 months ago)
He’s still just a normal lad. He’s just having a chilled conversation
kjek1 (2 years ago)
I disagree with that, I remember when they broke through, he's the same age as me. He was a normal sounding kid from sheffield, looked it too, didn't have the pretentious half american half northern accent he has now.
Adam Finn (2 years ago)
+kjek1 I disagree, he's honestly been like that since he was a kid when their first album was recorded. He may have stuck on a leather jacket and put in some hair grease but he's never tried to be cool the way he talks, he just has a cool accent and a unique way of speaking
kjek1 (3 years ago)
+SodaPrezsing No I mean the latter. He tries really hard and it's tragic
SodaPrezsing (3 years ago)
+kjek1 Think you mean the former
Peteral (3 years ago)
Im Norwegian and get everything he is saying. But i must say that ive been following this band for so long, since 2009. And I think i've gotten so used to the accent :P
Alex Turner (3 years ago)
he's not that hard to understand omg
maddy (3 years ago)
lol this is the most he has talked in any interview i've seen
Susanna Powers (3 years ago)
I love Alex dearly, but I wish there were more interviews with the entire band and it's not just him talking. I'm not complaint, because he usually has interesting things to say, but the band is not all about him. I wish the magazines and radio stations would understand that.
g man tramp (6 months ago)
Luckas Bish He is a great drummer but no better than Clem Burke nor Stewart Copeland who are both in their 60,s
X.E.X (7 months ago)
There is a reason why he gets most of the attention. He's one of the best songwriters of this generation if not the best & he composes most of the bands songs, so that's why people are interested so much in him because he's the creator, and the industry changer. Arctic Monkeys isn't just an ordinary signed band, they broken the most records of any band period & Alex is the true master behind all that. Yes the band works together and sometimes even compose their parts separately but at the end of the day it's Alex. tbh the band supports that, they want him to be the spotlight, it;s more publicity for the whole band leading to bigger opportunities. In other words the band is probably pushing Alex to do these solo interviews etc.
Luckas Bish (1 year ago)
My boy Matt needs more recognition for those amazing drum skills
atlantic monkeys (2 years ago)
That's the whole purpose of a frontman
triggered (2 years ago)
+Susanna Powers Jamie hates talking in interviews, when he's given a mic in the group he just puts it behind his back. There's a video of him going off on Sky News because he really doesn't have any tact so he doesn't speak. O'Malley is somewhat similar, but perhaps more pleasant. Alex has to talk because he's the lead singer and the lyricist, Matt enjoys talking because he loves the sound of his own voice haha.
BumbleandBoo (3 years ago)
It's funny cause they're all kinda dicks and when they first became famous, Jamie Cook stripped off in a pub in High Green, I'm talking everything off and expecting everything to be done for him, keeping in mind he's fully nude, all because they got signed, his dad's a bigger dickhead ;) expecting all the rage comments and the "bullshit didn't happen" if you ever meet Cook, ask him about The Packhorse 😂😂
SodaPrezsing (3 years ago)
+BumbleandBoo Elaborate please I love gossip
Ben Zombie (3 years ago)
I like how sort of relaxed and humble he seems here, away from all the bigshot crap and the hype and the awards he's just a bloke with a passion for music. Some may find the strong Sheffield accent difficult, but it is a big part of what makes AM's music more unique and distinctive. I've grown up in the South West and I don't have much of an accent myself but I do have an appreciation for all the different tones and twangs from around Britain, his is quite relaxing in its way.
A Black, I understand him just fine, too, but his sentences are SOOO LONG and by the time he finishes, you forget what he was talking about.
